Dr. Studdard

Dr. Studdard is a pulmonologist/critical care physician in private practice in Jackson, Mississippi. He is on the medical staff at St. Dominic -Jackson Memorial Hospital, River Oaks Hospital, Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, Regency Hospital of Jackson, Baptist Restorative Care and Central Mississippi Medical Center. While practicing pulmonary medicine, Dr. Studdard has witnessed, first hand, the ravages of tobacco-related disease. As a result of treating his very sick patients, Dr. Studdard has become a strong anti-tobacco advocate.

In 1990, Dr. Studdard became a member of the Public Affairs Committee of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). As Chair of this committee from 1997 until the present, Dr. Studdard’s passion for tobacco control resulted in many successful programs for the ACCP. These programs include, but are not limited to, a tobacco control focus for the annual Capitol Hill Caucus, which brings together physicians from multiple disciplines and public officials who meet face-to-face. Dr. Studdard was also instrumental in developing an educational program for ACCP officers on state level tobacco issues resulting from the multi-state settlement.

Because of Dr. Studdard’s vision that physicians must become pro-active in public health issues such as tobacco control, he brought Mississippi Attorney Mike Moore and the leadership of the ACCP together to fight the tobacco industry in early 1994. Dr. Studdard also participated in writing the amicus curiae brief which was submitted to the Mississippi Supreme Court in defense of Mike Moore, As Attorney General of the State of Mississippi vs. Kirk Fordice, As Governor of the State of Mississippi. Dr. Studdard’s dedication to reducing the number of patients he treats for tobacco related diseases, and his leadership qualities resulted in the ACCP having a seat at the initial tobacco settlement negotiations.

Recently, Dr. Studdard was an active participant in writing the amicus curiae brief for the U.S. Supreme Court case regarding the Food and Drug Administration vs. Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp., et al. He is also a current board member for the Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi, which focuses on youth tobacco education and prevention.
